Early Bird Charters

Capt. Dave Preble is descended from a long line of seafarers. His father was a commercial fisherman, and his eldest son, a graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, is a deck officer in the U.S. Navy. One of his ancestors, Commodore Edward Preble, commanded the U.S. fleet from his flagship, the USS Constitution, during the Barbary War in 1803-1804. Capt. Dave holds a masters degree in biology and a U.S. Merchant Marine license as master of 100 ton coastal vessels. He has many years of experience in commercial, sport, and charter fishing from Maine to the Caribbean to the Pacific coast of Mexico. He is New England regional editor of Salt Water Sportsman magazine and is the author of dozens of articles on fish and fishing as well as three books, Fishing for Yellowfin Tuna, Fly Fishing Offshore: Cape Cod to Cape Hatteras, and his critically acclaimed book of stories and essays, The Fishes of the Sea. Capt. Dave's knowledge and experience can be relied upon to provide you with the very best in ocean sportfishing!

The Early Bird is 31 feet 4 inches long and is U.S. documented as a coastwise commercial vessel of 8 gross tons. With a full keel, hard chines aft for stability, modern electronics, and a commercial grade diesel engine, she is a safe and comfortable boat. Within the bounds of prudent seamanship, the Early Bird is an aggressive hunter of ocean gamefish. We fish the rich inshore and offshore waters of the continental shelf south of Rhode Island for all available species from tautog to tuna.
