This region consists of Cape Cod Bay, Buzzard's Bay, The Cape Cod Canal, Nantucket Sound, and near-coastal and offshore fisheries in the areas surrounding Cape Cod and the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.

This region includes the Metro Boston Area and Boston Harbor.

In its most restrictive sense, the North Shore includes only the coastal cities and towns in Essex County south of Cape Ann: Beverly, Danvers, Peabody, Salem, Marblehead, Swampscott, Nahant, Lynn.
